Catalogue of exhibition Fyodor Matveyev. A Tour of Italy.
From September 3 to October 26 the State Tretyakov Gallery is hosting the first retrospective exhibition of works by Fyodor Matveyev, a classical representative of the Russian academic art school and a skilled panoramic landscape painter, to mark the painter's 250th birth anniversary. Recognized by the contemporaries, his art was later forgotten. Preparing the exhibition demanded the completion of a difficult task of gathering together those rather scarce works that have survived to this day never being exhibited together.
The exhibition was prepared by the State Hermitage, the Russian Museum, and the National Arts Museum of the Republic of Belarus. The Ekaterina Cultural Foundation provided for the exhibition one of the most famous Matveyev's works, A Landscape with Shepherds Pasturing the Cattle (1778), and supported issue of album catalogue Fyodor Matveyev. A Tour of Italy.
To prepare the catalogue, the results of many years of research were summarized which enabled to find out new details of the painter's biography, and specify his landscapes' content and time of creation. Currently, this edition is the most comprehensive catalogue of Matveyev's works. It includes Matveyev's paintings and drawings, as well as the story of his live and creative work (written by S. Usacheva).
